It's possible to have a fascinating educational family holiday in Lisbon, and there are also plenty of great beaches to work on your tan. In downtown Lisbon, you'll also want to visit the Gulbenkian, which has to be Portugal's answer to the British Museum full of fascinating cultural artifacts and with some superb gardens in the grounds. A short tram ride to the west of Lisbon will also bring you to Belem, where you can explore attractions like the Belem Tower and the Belem Cultural Centre, which features a fantastic art collection including works by Dali, Picasso, Warhol and Magritte. The Castelo de São Jorge also offers great views and isn't quite such a steep climb. Or you might try climbing up the Cristo Rei, a huge statue of Christ with spectacular views across the whole city. With favorites like Banner Elk Cafe & Tavern, Stonewalls Restaurant, and The Pedalin' Pig and more, get ready to experience the best flavors around. Even exploring the city centre will take a few days out of a family holiday as there is no real central district, although Praça do Comércio is a good central place to start, in Baxia, or Rossio, the city's main square which has a sort of Trafalgar Square feel to it. Things to do in Lisbon As Portugal's capital, there is a lot to see and do in Lisbon. Full of bleached white limestone buildings and intimate alleyways, Lisbon's mix of traditional architecture and contemporary culture makes it the perfect place for a family holiday. Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, has become an increasingly popular place to visit in recent years, with a warm Mediterranean climate in spite of its place facing the Atlantic Ocean. The Baldwin County Heritage Museum provides a window into the past lives of Alabama’s residents and makes for fascinating viewing. Alabama has a rich history from the early Native American years to periods of French, Spanish, and British rule and then through to the story of the American Civil War. Based in Summerdale, Alligator Alley is home to lots of rescued alligators and allows you to get close to these wonderful natives of Alabama and observe them being fed! Another recommended attraction is the Baldwin County Heritage Museum. One place that will appeal especially to families with small kids is a visit to Alligator Alley. Alabama is a fascinating state, full of history and charisma, and it’s well worth prying yourself away from its pristine beaches to check out some of its other attractions. Opportunities exist to land a big haul either from shore or boat and there are plenty of charter trips for those wanting to try out some deep sea fishing. Another popular Gulf Shores attraction is sea angling. The list of activities that can be indulged includes surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking, and banana boat rides. As well as sunbathing, swimming, and making sandcastles, you may also wish to hire a boogie board from one of the surf shops for some fun amongst the breakers, or perhaps you might decide to try some kite flying. The beaches are soft and welcoming and this combination means it is perfect for a family beach holiday. Gulf Shores is situated on the Gulf of Mexico which means you can look forward to warm waters that are a pleasure to swim in. However, Alabama does have its own stretch of coastline and Gulf Shores is one of its premier beach resorts. After all, when we think of Alabama we tend to think more of its inland waterways and alligators rather than crystal clear seas. With Florida dominating the south eastern coastline of the United States, it would be easy to overlook the potential of a beach holiday in Alabama. My friends ordered a Bloody Mary which was awful and had to be sent back. I remember an episode of Restaurant Impossible where the cook for that place, used a microwave and everything came out of a box or a bag.Īs soon as we sat down, we were informed of the items that they did not have from the menu, which excluded 1/2 of the menu.
